Trip Overview

Langtang Helambu trek about 72 kilometers northeast of Kathmandu, is noted for its scenic grandeur and pleasant climate. The Helambu region, extending from north of Taramarang to the tree limit of the Gosainkunda Lake and lower slopes of Jugal Himal, has several highland Tamang and Sherpa villages, scattered on both sides of the Melamchi Khola.

This Langtang Helambu trek is rated as an easier trek because the elevations are lower, ranging between 800m and 3600m, which indicates less climbing and warmer temperatures. One advantage to this trek is there are fewer trekkers here than on the Annapurna trek and some parts of the Everest trek, but there is still a wide range of cultures and spectacular scenery.

A 15km drive from Kathmandu takes you to the starting point of the trek. On arrival at Sundarijal, you can visit the Shivapuri watershed and Wildlife Reserve. From Sundarijal, the trail heads up to the concrete steps beside the pipeline which supplies drinking water for the valley. We leave the pipeline near the dam, and then on to Mulkharka, trekking up the ridge at around 1895m, some 600m above Sundarijal. There you can take some time to relax in the convenient tea shops and enjoy the view back over the valley. Following a ridgeline, the trail continues via the lightly populated forest to Magen Goth from where the view of Langtang and Gosaikund peak is stunning, and finally reaches Tharepati (3490m). This walk is one of the best ridges and walks among all treks in Nepal. The trails to Gosaikund branch off north–west from here.

Turning east, the trail rapidly descends down a ravine through the small Sherpa village of Malemchigaon. (2530m) with splendid lodges and fine old and artistic Gompas. The trail again descends leaving the village and crossing Malenchi Khola by a bridge at 1890m and making the long climb up the other side of the valley to Tarke Gyang at 2620m, which is the largest village in Helambu.

We did the Annapurna Circuit with Unique Path and our trip was amazing! Everything was seamless: all accommodation was booked in advance and we got good rooms along the route; all our transport was on time and we found our driver very safe; and we were told where to be and when. Babu, who organised our trip, thought of everything and was very flexible and professional. We ended up changing our original plan. All our hotels/ flights / transport were adjusted accordingly. Babu also helped organise a tour of Kathmandu for us. On top of that our guide & porter (Ishwor & Ramesh) were great. They were knowledgeable, fun, caring and aware of mountain safety. We had a great time spending 14 days with them and felt like we were in very capable hands! We can’t wait to come back and do a different trek with them and would recommend to any Nepal visitors!
